Careers at Buckler’s Mead Academy

At Buckler’s Mead Academy, we realise that young people spend a comparatively short time in school before they move on to further education and their future careers. It is therefore really important that our students are fully equipped with the employability skills they will need for the rest of their adult life. Buckler’s students are given the opportunity to acquire these skills through the varied curriculum we offer here in school and also through a variety of other opportunities such as Alternative Timetable days, Personal Development lessons and Tutor Time. We also have a variety of extra-curricular activities that take place throughout the year such as visits to local employers and visiting speakers, some of which are former Buckler’s Mead students themselves.

For individualised careers guidance and one to one meetings we have Rachael Howe our in-school Careers Adviser. Rachael runs individual face to face meetings as well as group work so that students can explore the skills they already have, work on improving their employability skills and explore their options and plan to achieve their aspirations. Rachael also coordinates careers events in school as well as Year 10 Work Experience and can be contacted on rhowe@bucklersmeadacademy.com

We promote active and successful working relationships with local employers, apprenticeship providers and training providers. We are members of the Yeovil Chamber of Commerce as well as the South Somerset 14-19 Partnership. If you are an employer, former student, apprenticeship or training provider and would like the opportunity to come and talk to our students about the jobs and courses you can offer, please contact Rachael Howe on the email address above.

Alumni

At Buckler’s Mead Academy we are really proud of the successes of our former students and we love everyone to keep in touch so we can celebrate these with you. We also realise that the challenges and experiences that they have been through help to inspire our current students with their aspirations and choices. Some of our alumni have been into school to give talks about their career routes and current jobs, some have mentored small groups of students and others have worked with specific departments to help GCSE students with specific skills. We would love you to get in touch if you feel you have something to offer and there is no long term commitment to do anything. Whatever you can offer, we know our students will appreciate the time you can give. Please get in touch with Rachael Howe on rhowe@bucklersmeadacademy.com

College and Sixth Form Links

When students leave Buckler’s Mead Academy at the end of Year 11, the majority go into further education at one of the many excellent colleges and sixth forms in the local area. We are very proud of the fact that so many of our students choose to carry on participating in education and we try to ensure that they have all the information they need to make the best choices for them as individuals. If you would like to visit our school to show our students what you can offer them post-16, please get in touch with Rachael Howe on  rhowe@bucklersmeadacademy.com
